Default Important cPanel Updates

Greetings,

We have some important updates being made to our cPanel servers starting this weekend. We are going to be converting our shared servers to use PHP 5 as the default version for php scripts. Up until now we have made PHP 5 available through the use of an Apache handler that you could set. Going forward, this behavior will be reversed. You will instead have to tell Apache to use the PHP 4 handler if your scripts are still not compatible with PHP 5. We will provide more information about how you can control which version of PHP your site uses in another post on this thread after we start the conversion process.

We will also be updating MySQL on the server to use MySQL 5 instead of MySQL 4 at the same time.

The reason why we are making these changes is that version 4 of PHP and MySQL reached their end of life status last year. No further updates are being provided for these software packages. Therefore in order to keep our servers secure along with being able to support the latest software scripts out there that require the new versions, we have to roll out newer versions of these packages.

If there is enough demand, we will setup a legacy PHP4/MySQL 4 server so that people who need the older packages in their current format can continue to be hosted as well.

Our schedule for rolling out these updates are as follows:

cpanel1 - April 11th
cpanel2 and 3 - April 18th
trinity - April 25th

We will also be updating all of our managed servers (virtual and dedicated) to these new versions as well starting on April 18th unless we are requested not to.

If you have any questions about these changes, please let us know and we'll be happy to answer them.

Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding while we perform these enhancements to your hosting services!

Greetings,

We converted cpanel1 on Saturday without any major issues. There was a minor problem with PHP5 handlers getting removed by cPanel, but we have fixed that now.

If you find that your sites need PHP4 instead of PHP5, you can log into cPanel and click on the "PHP Configuration" icon in the "Software / Services" section. From there, you can select the version of PHP to use for your sites including PHP4. Please note that PHP4 runs as the account user not the Apache user so you may need to have your account's ownerships/permissions fixed for it to work. If this is the case, please open a ticket with us and we'll be glad to assist you with this.

If you have any questions about these updates, please let us know and we'll be happy to answer them.

Thanks for your patience while we perform these udpates to your web hosting services!

Hal
